Washington’s excitement and countless attractions offer something for every type of visitor, from the first time visitor to the frequent traveler. Washington is known for its abundance of museums, art galleries and other cultural offerings.

Washington’s natural attractions are appealing as her cultural treasures. The 1,754 acre- Rock Creek Park provides a quiet oasis, stretching half the lengthy of the city.
In additional, carefully manicured grounds of governmental buildings, and a multitude of squares and circles, provide frequent points of beauty throughout the Nation’s Capital.

The Washington, DC Chapter has curated tours to enhance your visit to our magnificent city. We are fortunate to have access to behind-the-scenes activities at each tour location. Each of our curated tours will take place on Friday, August 4 and will be limited to 10 attendees, to keep them rich in experience.

We will also offer a “Welcome to Washington” tour to explore our Nation’s monuments and memorials. This tour is limited to 50 people and is being offered on Saturday.

Hillwood Estate, Museum & Gardens

Tour Curator: Jordan Morgenstern

Friday, August 4, 2017 • 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Nestled in the hills of northwest Washington, D.C., Hillwood Gardens & Estate welcomes visitors from around the world with its gracious hospitality. Escape into an oasis only five miles from downtown D.C.

Marjorie Merriweather Post bought Hillwood in 1955 and soon decided her home would be a museum that would inspire and educate the public. Her northwest Washington, D.C. estate endowed the country with the most comprehensive collection of Russian imperial art outside of Russia, a distinguished 18th-century French decorative art collection, and twenty-five acres of serene landscaped gardens and natural woodlands for all to enjoy. Opened as a public institution in 1977, today Hillwood’s allure stems from the equally fascinating parts that make up the whole. From the captivating life of Marjorie Post to the exquisitely maintained Mansion and Gardens, the experience of Hillwood outshines even the Fabergé Eggs.

A special limited-time exhibit combining almost all of Marjorie’s jewels, currently scattered around the world, will be available during our tour.

The Pentagon

Tour Curator: Gordon Tanner

Friday, August 4, 2017 • 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

The Pentagon is the headquarters of the Department of the Defense of the United States of America. Our tour will dynamically highlight the respective missions of the five Armed Services, the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Joint Staff and numerous military displays.

The Pentagon, built in just 16 months, is the world’s largest low-rise office building. It is twice the size of the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, has more than twice the floor space of the Empire State Building, and the U.S. Capitol could fit into any one of its five wedge-shaped sections. The architects and Engineer officers who designed and constructed the Pentagon produced one of the most innovative and unique structures of the war era.

The tour will include a visit to the separate, newly dedicated, 9/11 Memorial as well as the Pentagon’s private chapel, normally reserved solely for Armed Forces members, with its memorials to the brave women and men who fought and died to preserve our Country. The tour will conclude with a luncheon in the Chief of Staff’s private dining room.

The Diplomatic Reception Rooms, which are used for official functions hosted by the Secretary of State and other high level government officials, hold a premier collection of 18th century American furniture, paintings and decorative arts.

The 42-room suite was renovated in the 1960s and is filled with more than $100 million worth of American artworks and antiques. Rooms include the gilded Benjamin Franklin Dining Room and the John Quincy Adams State Drawing Room. Keep your eyes peeled for the wooden architect’s table where Thomas Jefferson is believed to have drafted the Declaration of Independence.

Following the guided tour of the State Department we will travel to the Cosmos Club for lunch. The Cosmos Club, the former home of a member of the DC Black Tie Chapter, is now the home of this renowned private social club, incorporated in 1878. The Cosmos Club is widely recognized for its many Nobel Laureates and other distinguished members in science, literature, the arts, or public service.
